Schools With a Newcomer Focus

The are two school boards in Hamilton, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board. Newcomer elementary students are usually placed in grade according to age, whereas secondary school students arriving from another country may have an initial assessment before they can enter a school. The purpose of this assessment is to find out about the students’ educational background and English skills so that they can be placed in the right grade, and the right school. The assessment will cover mathematics and language.
