Internships

The successful Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program (FPSYIP) offers youth 15-30 years old a 6 to 10 month paid internship within the federal government. Any Federal Public Sector institution can propose an internship, but it requires a voluntary mentor - someone willing to share knowledge and skills, to be a coach, a guide, and a source of moral support.

Other benefits include:

  • Satisfaction in accepting and completing a challenge
  • Pride in contributing to a young person’s accomplishments
  • Improved Management, Leadership and Interpersonal skills through mentoring, which is recognized as important professional competency.
  • The Fresh Perspectives that an intern brings - insights, vitality and enthusiasm to the workplace.

All interns are paid directly by the YMCA. The YMCA is the interns’ legal employer. The interns are not replacement workers, they are focused on broadly based developmental assignments that will expose them to the tools they’ll need for successful employment. The mentor will also receive ongoing support from a YMCA counsellor, as well as benefit from four weeks of preparatory training. The YMCA counsellor will visit the intern periodically as well.

Begin the application process today by calling the FPSYIP team:

Immigrants & Credentials

The YMCA operates Immigrant Settlement Services (ISS) which provide orientation and language assessments as well as employment services to Hamilton and Brantford newcomers. Both the ISS of Hamilton and ISS of Brantford programs are a great place to start to assist in your hiring of newcomers to Ontario, as educational requirements differ for every profession and trade, and there are a number of different organizations that assess someone's schooling to ensure it meets Ontario's standards.

Each regulatory body in Ontario decides how to assess an applicant's academic credentials. Some educational institutions and occupational regulatory bodies have their own academic assessment processes. Some use the services of a Credential Assessment Service.

Hamilton employers can call YMCA ISS Hamilton for further direction at 905.540.9679.

Brantford employers can contact the YMCA ISS Brantford at 519.752.4568 for further information.
